Stopping smoking with hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy has helped many thousands of smokers achieve their goal of quitting smoking. Deciding to become a smoker is not a decision that most people take logically. It is an emotional decision taken at a subconscious level. Therefore, any decision to stop needs to be taken at that same level. Quite simply, this is why hypnosis is such a successful way to give up smoking cigarettes. Many people considering stopping smoking feel that their true choice is being taken away from them. The secret of hypnotherapy is that it gets people to use their imagination to create a non-smoking future. This often feels very positive and empowering.

To investigate the most effective method of stopping smoking, the University of Iowa in the US carried out a meta-analysis, using the results of more than 600 studies, with a total of nearly 72,000 people. The results included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, and were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. They clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy.

The treatment and how many sessions?

Seven out of ten people need just 2 to 3 sessions.

1st session: This is an intake and motivation test directed at exploring your smoking behaviour and psychological and emotional attachment to smoking. Form this session onwards you psychologically prepare to stop smoking on the day of the second session. You are given a simple exercise to do which will help you. This exercise also helps you replace smoking with a healthier habit.

2nd session: Based on the findings of the intake and motivation test you then undergo hypnosis in the second session.

3rd session: Should you still be smoking after a couple of weeks you then come back for a third session in which we explore what has blocked you from reaching your goal. You will then undergo hypnosis again.

The sessions last between 60-70 minutes.

What happens if I haven’t stopped smoking after 3 sessions?

If you haven’t stopped after three sessions, which is the case for 30% of my clients, a deeper therapeutic approach is required. In these cases the subconscious mind is using smoking as a sort of mask to hide insecure feelings and/or vulnerability. This ultimately connects to one’s self-esteem and self-value. It is important to explore this further so your self-esteem and self-value can be strengthened. Only then will you feel strong enough to stop smoking. This process takes, on average, another 3 sessions and proves to be very successful.
